Why this returns a band and not a number

The source table publishes four cut-points per age and sex band: the 40th, 60th, 80th and 95th percentiles. Four points tell you which pair a reading sits between and nothing finer. Announcing "you are at the 73rd percentile" would mean assuming a distribution shape the source never published, and the resulting number would look far more precise than the evidence behind it. So the answer is a range — and "60th to 79th" genuinely means at or above the 60th-percentile value and below the 80th-percentile one, not the 70th percentile, which nobody measured.

Where the norms come from

The Cooper Institute's Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study normative data, as reproduced in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription. It is the same table this site's cardio fitness score reads — shared between the two tools rather than copied, so the two cannot drift apart and give you different answers for the same reading. The bands run from 20 to 79 in decades; outside that range there is no row, and this page returns nothing rather than borrowing the nearest one.

Who the reference population is

Overwhelmingly white, college-educated Americans, healthy enough to volunteer for a maximal treadmill test. That makes it a reference population rather than the population. A percentile against this group is a real, checkable comparison, and it is not the same statement as "fitter than 80 percent of adults your age". Nothing on this page supports the second sentence.

Where your VO₂ max came from matters

The table describes a directly measured VO₂ max — mask, gas analyser, maximal effort. Feeding in an estimate carries that method's own error on top of everything else here, and for wrist-based estimates that error is commonly several ml/kg/min, which is enough to move you a whole band. A submaximal test estimate has the same problem in a smaller way. Use the band, not the boundary: if you are within a couple of ml/kg/min of a cut-point, your true position is genuinely ambiguous.

What a percentile is not

It is not a health status and not a risk figure. Cardiorespiratory fitness tracks all-cause mortality strongly across the literature, but a percentile against a volunteer cohort is a position in a distribution, and turning that into a personal statement about your future would require analyses this table does not contain. The useful reading is the gap: how many ml/kg/min sit between you and the next published cut-point, which is a target a training block can actually be built around.
