What is the Åstrand step test?
The Åstrand–Ryhming step test is a submaximal fitness test: you step up and down onto a box at a fixed cadence for five minutes, then read the heart rate you have settled on. Fitter hearts move more blood per beat, so at the same workload a fitter person settles at a lower heart rate — and that gap is what the test converts into an estimated VO₂ max. Nothing is maximal, which makes it usable for people who should not be pushed to exhaustion.
How this calculator works
We use the linear form of Åstrand and Ryhming's 1954 nomogram: for men VO₂ max in litres per minute = 3.744 × (weight in kg + 5) ÷ (heart rate − 62), and for women 3.750 × (weight in kg + 3) ÷ (heart rate − 65). Dividing by bodyweight converts that into the familiar ml/kg/min. The two equations are tied to their step heights, so the 40 cm and 33 cm boxes are not interchangeable.
Why the age correction factor matters
The extrapolation from a submaximal heart rate assumes a maximum heart rate near 195–200 bpm, which is only true for young adults. Åstrand published correction factors in 1960 that scale the raw estimate down as maximum heart rate falls: 1.10 at age 15, 1.00 at 25, 0.87 at 35, 0.78 at 45, 0.68 at 60, and 0.65 at 65. Skipping the correction is the single most common way this test gets reported far too high.
Running the test properly
Set a metronome to 90 beats per minute and take one beat per foot movement — up, up, down, down — which gives 22.5 complete steps per minute. Step for a full five minutes; the estimate assumes your heart rate has plateaued, so a shorter test reads low. Measure the heart rate during the last 15 seconds, and treat the result as invalid if it lands below 120 or above 170 bpm: outside that window the relationship the nomogram relies on breaks down.
