What a split table is for

Marathons are lost to pacing far more often than to fitness. A split table turns a goal time into a number you can check at every marker, which is the only reliable way to catch the classic mistake: a first 10 km run twenty seconds a kilometre too fast because the crowd carried you and it felt easy at the time.

How this calculator works

An even plan divides the goal time by the distance and prints the running total at each marker. A negative split of s percent means the second half is run s percent quicker than the first, so the first half gets T ÷ (2 − s) of the clock and the second half gets what is left. The pace switch happens at the true halfway point — 21.0975 km in a marathon, a few hundred metres past the 21 km sign — and the closing segment gets its own row, because the last 195 m of the kilometre table and the last 352 m of the mile table both cost real time.

Even or negative?

Almost every marathon world record has been run on even or slightly negative splits, and among ordinary finishers the people who slow down least are the ones who started closest to their average pace. One to two percent is a real negative split — about a minute across a marathon. Asking for much more usually means the first half was jogged. The opposite plan, banking time early, is the most reliable way to end up walking at 32 km.

Racing to the table

Course markers and GPS watches disagree, and the marker is right: run the tangents, take your splits from the signs, and expect your watch to read long by the end. Give the first kilometre or mile ten to fifteen seconds for the start-line crush instead of sprinting to make it up. And if race day turns hot or windy, rewrite the whole table before the gun rather than discovering at 30 km that your plan was written for different weather.
