Why is there a separate Asian BMI scale?

Because the relationship between BMI and body fat is not the same in every population. At an identical BMI, people of South and East Asian descent carry on average several percentage points more body fat than people of European descent, and a greater share of it around the organs rather than under the skin. Visceral fat is the fraction that drives metabolic risk. The practical consequence is that the health problems which start appearing around a BMI of 25 in European populations start appearing nearer 23 in many Asian ones — so the same number means something different depending on who is standing on the scale.

The two schemes, and why both are shown

The 2000 WHO/IASO/IOTF Asia-Pacific report moved the overweight boundary to 23.0 and split obesity into class I at 25.0 and class II at 30.0. Then in 2004 a WHO expert consultation revisited the question and declined to issue a new global table at all: the shift is real, but its size varies between Asian populations, so any single redefinition would be wrong somewhere. Instead it named 23.0 and 27.5 as public-health action points — thresholds at which countries should consider intervening. The two schemes are not nested; 27.5 sits inside the Asia-Pacific obese class I. This page shows all of it, because a calculator that displayed only one would be hiding the disagreement that is the actual subject.

Which one applies to you?

There is no clean answer, and anyone giving you one is overstating the evidence. The Asia-Pacific cutoffs were developed for and validated in Asian populations, and are used in national guidelines across the region — Japan, China, India, Singapore and others each apply their own variant. But ancestry is not a checkbox, populations are not homogeneous, and the individual variation inside any group is far larger than the difference between group averages. The useful reading is not "which category am I" but "how close am I to the stricter line, and is my waist telling the same story".

BMI's ordinary limits still apply

Neither table can tell muscle from fat. A trained lifter reads as overweight sooner on the stricter scale, not because the scale is wrong but because BMI was never measuring what they wanted to know. Neither table knows where the mass sits, which is the part that matters most for metabolic risk — a waist measurement adds more information than switching between BMI tables does. If your two categories disagree and you want a tiebreaker, measure your waist.
