Cooper test table — 12-minute run norms by age and sex, with pace and VO₂ max

Cooper's 12-minute run distances for every age band from 13 up, for men and women, plus an even-pace table that turns a target distance into a 400 m lap time, pace per kilometre and the VO₂ max it implies.

How to read the Cooper test table

Find your sex and age band, then the column your distance falls in; thresholds are inclusive minimums, so 2,400 m for a man of 25 is above average, not average. The even-pace table works the other way: pick the distance you are aiming for and it gives the lap time to hold from the first lap, because the commonest way to fail a Cooper test is going out too fast.

How is VO₂ max calculated from the Cooper test?

VO₂ max ≈ (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73. A 2,400 m run gives about 42.4 ml/kg/min. The formula is a population fit, so treat it as an estimate within a few points.

Where do these norms come from?

From Kenneth Cooper's published tables. Bands under 20 come from his school-age tables and are stricter than the adult ones; nothing is published below age 13, so the table starts there.
