What is age grading?

Age grading turns a finish time into a percentage of what the fastest person of your age and sex could run for that distance. It lets a 62-year-old and a 24-year-old compare performances honestly, and it lets you compare your own results across a decade of racing without pretending the clock stood still.

How this calculator works

We use the WMA road tables (2025 revision, approved by the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council). Each age, sex, and distance has a factor of 1.0 or less. Multiply your time by that factor to get your open-age equivalent, then divide the open world standard by it: age-graded % = open standard ÷ (your time × age factor). A 50-year-old man running 20:00 for 5K has a factor of 0.8775, an open equivalent of 17:33, and a score of 73.0%.

Reading your score

The conventional brackets are 90%+ world class, 80%+ national class, 70%+ regional class, and 60%+ local class. Most consistent club runners live in the 55–70% band, and moving up a single point takes real training. Track the percentage rather than the time and progress stays visible even as the years add up.
