What is the Harvard step test?
The Harvard step test was built at the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory by Brouha, Graybiel and Heath in 1943 to grade the physical readiness of servicemen with nothing but a bench, a metronome and a stopwatch. It measures two things at once: how long you can hold a fixed workload, and how quickly your heart rate falls once you stop. Both are aerobic fitness, and the physical fitness index puts them in a single number.
How this calculator works
The long form is PFI = (100 × seconds stepped) ÷ (2 × the sum of the three recovery pulse counts). The short form uses only the first count and a different denominator: PFI = (100 × seconds stepped) ÷ (5.5 × first count), calibrated so it lands on the same scale. The long form is the better measurement, because a single count taken a minute into recovery is noisy — but the short form only asks the tester to find a pulse once, which is why it survives in gyms and classrooms.
Running the test properly
Use a 20-inch (50.8 cm) bench and set a metronome to 120 beats per minute, taking one beat per foot movement — up, up, down, down — which gives 30 complete steps per minute. Step for five minutes, leading with alternating legs if you like, keeping your back straight and standing fully upright on the bench each time. Stop the moment you cannot hold the cadence for 15 seconds and write down the second you stopped; that partial time is a legitimate score, not a failed test.
Counting the recovery pulse
Sit down immediately after the last step and stay seated. Count your pulse for 30 seconds three times: from 1:00 to 1:30, from 2:00 to 2:30, and from 3:00 to 3:30 after the finish. Use the radial pulse at the wrist or a heart-rate strap, not a thumb on your own carotid — pressing the neck can slow the very heart rate you are trying to measure. Miscounting by five beats moves the index by several points, so if you are testing yourself, a chest strap you can read afterwards beats fingers every time.
