Procedure
-
Assess the Situation and Level
- Determine if the dining event is planned or spontaneous.
- Assess the user's current experience level with restaurant navigation (from Level 1: Structural to Level 4: Autonomous).
-
Phase 1: Pre-Meal Planning (Level 1: Structural focus)
- Encourage the user to review the restaurant menu online before arrival to "pre-decision" their meal.
- Suggest a high-protein snack before leaving the house to prevent arriving in a famished state.
- Advise drinking 500ml of water approximately 30 minutes before the meal to assist with satiety.
-
Phase 2: Ordering Tactics (Level 2: Tactical focus)
- Protein and Fiber: Guide the user to choose lean proteins (grilled, roasted, or steamed) and high-fiber vegetable sides.
- Healthy Swaps: Suggest substituting calorie-dense sides (fries/potatoes) with steamed vegetables or salads.
- Caloric Control: Remind the user to request all sauces, dressings, and dips on the side.
- Social Influence: Advise the user to "order first" to avoid being influenced by the choices of others.
-
Phase 3: Mindful Execution (Level 3: Behavioral focus)
- Dab/Dip Method: Instruct the user to dip their fork into the side sauce rather than pouring it over the food.
- Pacing: Explain that it takes 20 minutes for satiety signals to reach the brain. Encourage slowing down, chewing thoroughly, and drinking water between bites.
- Satiety Cues: Instruct the user to stop eating at the first sign of being 80% full.
-
Phase 4: Integration and Monitoring (Level 4: Autonomous focus)
- Discuss "planned indulgences" where the user consciously chooses one high-calorie item while keeping the rest of the meal lean.
- Offer to save the selected meal as a
create_noteor meal log for future reference.
-
Review and Feedback
- Post-meal, ask the user how they felt about their choices and satiety levels to build self-efficacy.
- Incorporate mindfulness-based reflections if the user experienced emotional or social pressure during the meal.
