Procedure

  1. Assess Environmental Stress

    • Determine the current or forecasted dew point for the user's training location.
    • Identify the heat stress category: Low (<13°C/55°F), Moderate (13–18°C/55–65°F), High (18–21°C/65–70°F), or Extreme (>21°C/70°F).
  2. Adjust Intensity Targets

    • For Moderate Heat: Use update_workout to reduce absolute targets (pace or wattage) by 2–4%.
    • For High Heat: Use update_workout to reduce absolute targets by 5–10%.
    • For Extreme Heat: Shift the focus of the workout to maintenance or recovery intensity regardless of original targets.
  3. Adjust Weekly Volume

    • Evaluate total weekly load using get_current_week.
    • Apply volume reductions via update_week to manage systemic load:
      • Moderate Heat: Reduce total mileage or duration by 10–20%.
      • High/Extreme Heat: Reduce total mileage or duration by 30–50%.
  4. Modify Recovery Windows

    • Check for high-intensity sessions in the user's schedule.
    • Ensure at least 72 hours of recovery between high-intensity efforts during periods of extreme heat (up from the standard 48 hours). Use move_workout if necessary to space sessions.
  5. Apply Acclimation Protocols

    • Check get_user_history to see if the user has had recent heat exposure.
    • If the user is in the first 5–7 days of heat exposure (unacclimated), reduce volume and intensity by at least 50% to allow for plasma volume expansion and cooling adaptations.
  6. Update User Guidance

    • Use create_note to advise the user to prioritize RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) over absolute metrics.
    • Instruct the user that if a planned RPE 7 feels like an RPE 9, they should reduce their pace until the perceived effort matches the target.
    • Suggest scheduling high-intensity sessions during the lowest dew point windows (typically 5:00 AM – 8:00 AM).
