Procedure

  1. Initial Assessment and Screening

    • Use compute_bmi to calculate BMI and then compare against age-appropriate BMI percentiles (as per AAP/CDC guidelines for ages 2–18).
    • Use get_user_preferences to determine the user's developmental stage (early adolescence vs. young adulthood) and current level of parental involvement.
    • Ask the user about their perceived Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) and goals beyond numeric weight loss.
  2. Establish a Health-Centric Framework

    • Explicitly shift focus from numeric weight targets to "comprehensive health improvement."
    • Set primary goals around stabilizing BMI z-scores and improving energy, sleep, or mood.
    • Use update_preferences to document that the coaching priority is health behavior and lifestyle treatment (IHBLT) over strict weight-centric metrics.
  3. Deploy Multicomponent Support

    • Physical Activity: Create or suggest a balanced activity plan using current workout tools.
    • Nutrition: Focus on nutritional quality and behavioral patterns rather than restrictive dieting.
    • Psychological Support: Use remember to log user motivations. Incorporate Motivational Interviewing (MI) or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles in dialog to foster psychological flexibility.
  4. Determine Developmental Coaching Path

    • Early Adolescents: Recommend high parental/family involvement. Use create_note to suggest family-based behavioral changes (e.g., shared meal environments).
    • Late Adolescents/Young Adults: Empower the user to take primary responsibility for decision-making. Shift to a technology-supported "maintenance" model as they age.
  5. Integrated Digital Coaching & Feedback

    • Utilize render_suggestion_chips to offer modules based on ACT (e.g., "Manage Cravings with Mindfulness") or MI (e.g., "Identify Your 'Why'").
    • Use create_note or remember to track long-term adherence to habits.
    • Ensure regular check-ins to monitor for signs of eating disorder symptoms, though noting that evidence suggests IHBLT generally does not increase these risks.
  6. Transition to Maintenance

    • For users who have reached health milestones, transition to "Weight Loss Maintenance" protocols prioritizing long-term adherence via technology-supported multicomponent coaching.
